Rose Marie Miller, daughter of Doris Marie and Felix Ermond Harrelson passed away at home on September 15, 2014. She is predeceased by her husband of forty-two years, Robert Miller, her mother, Marie, her sister, Erma Jean, and several much-loved dogs. She leaves behind three children and their families: Dana Zhukova (Corby Martin), Jason Miller (Jill), and Todd Miller, seven grandchildren—Chelsea, Samuel, Colton, Peyton, Paige, Ethan, and Ayla; and four great-grandchildren—Elliott, Raiden, Lilah, and Rowan. She leaves behind her companion, carer, and dearest friend, Andy Brammer and his daughter, Zoe. Also to mourn her are her father, Ermond Harrelson, and three sisters—Jackie, Molly, and Barbara, many family members too numerous to name, and a wealth of cherished friends.
Rose was born June 8, 1940 in her grandmother's house. Raised in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, she was the eldest of five sisters. She learned to waterski in the bayous of her home town and she loved the beach. In high school she was a popular majorette who earned local acclaim as a likeable beauty frequently pictured in the newspaper for honors such as being selected for the Homecoming Court, winning beauty contests, representing her school in parades and festivals. She auditioned for and won a coveted position on the world famous "Dixie Darlings" drill team at the University of Southern Mississippi performing in Chicago, New York and several bowl games. At USM, she studied the education of children with developmental disabilities and she played an active role in her sorority.
In 1962, Rose married a young Green Beret, Robert Miller. When he was set to become an insurance agent, she persuaded him to return to college and go to law school and she provided the means for him to do so by working more than fulltime to support them while he went to school. Bob often credited Rose for his education and even for the success of his career saying that he could not have done it without her. Few people know that she was briefly a stewardess for Southern Airways and then did a couple stints as a runway model for a New York City fashion house. During the course of these years, Rose became expertly proficient at typing and shorthand, skills that opened doors to better jobs with more responsibilities. Her last such job was that of secretary to the president of Elmira College. After her youngest children started school, she opened a dress store "Ideas" in Waverly, NY, and then another in Towanda. She had an innate sense of style which showed in the decor of her home and in her dress. She had a gift for choosing what to wear herself and for choosing what to stock in her shops--and she did both with great pleasure. She especially enjoyed her buying trips to the New York garment district. Always very interested in her community, she was elected Village Trustee under Mayor Leary and felt privileged to work for the village of Waverly. Although she had lived in New York for most of her life, she never lost her southern accent nor her fondness for southern food counting turnip greens and cornbread two of her favorite foods. Rose was a voracious reader, a habit she encouraged in her children. For many years, she was a highly ranked bridge player playing in tournaments all over the United States. She was a diehard fan of horse-racing, one year attending each race of the Triple Crown. She was a world traveler with uncountable trips to Europe under her belt but she always preferred home. Home to Rose meant two places—her much-loved house in Waverly and any Gulf of Mexico beach near the part of Florida where she grew up. She considered the sound of the surf a potent healing force that could restore one's body and spirit. Raised in no particular religion, she converted to Catholicism after her marriage and raised her children as Catholics. But her spirituality was broader than any one religion and she was open to possibilities outside of Catholic doctrine. Not too long after her husband died of cancer in 2006, she had to fight her own lengthy battle against several cancers, and she did so with great dignity and courage. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren. She changed their lives with her encouragement and unflagging support. Her family will miss her all the days of their lives. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 am at Blessed Trinity Parish Saint James Church, 503 Clark St. Waverly NY. Family and friends are invited to call at Church from 9:00 am to 11:00 am Friday morning. Internment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
