Obituary

Ronald R. Heidig, of 101 Providence Street, Waverly, died peacefully at home on Friday, December 27, 2013. Born to Willard and Eleanor Heidig on November 4, 1933 in Scranton, PA, he moved with his family to Waverly at the age of 12. It is there that he lived his life. Graduating from high school in 1951, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and proudly served his country as a veteran of the Korean War. Returning home, he married Susan A. Cramer on October 29, 1955. They bought their home on Providence Street in 1957 and raised their three children there. He worked with his father at the R.K. Miller Lumber Yard in Elmira, then at Valley Cities Gas Company and Jim's Marine and Travel. Later he and his best friend, Ben Green, owned and operated Wheel Estates in Endicott. He took great pride in serving his community, first as a volunteer fireman in the Tioga Hose Company and then later as a longstanding member of the village Board of Sewer Commissioners. He was fond of travelling, and he loved the outdoors.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and his son hiked together and climbed Mount Marcy, Mount Katahdin, Mount Washington, Mount Hood, and Long's Peak, the highest points in New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. In recent years he spent many pleasurable hours with his beloved golden retrievers at his cabin in the woods outside of Spencer. He also enjoyed sports and was a dedicated Waverly Wolverine his whole life, as well a great and passionate fan of New York Yankee baseball and New York Giant football. Ron leaves behind his wife of 58 years, his son Lance (Katherine Reagan) of Ithaca, NY, a daughter Pam (Tim Leonard) of Poulsbo, WA, and three grandchildren, John, Hilary, and Thomas Leonard. He is survived by his brother Bill of Spotsylvania, VA, sister Janet Hunsinger of Hamilton, NY, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws Phillips and Eloise Cramer, and a daughter, Doris. Our extended family knew him lovingly as "Ronnie" or "Uncle Ron" and he was the life of our parties, gatherings, and family reunions. He loved his family and cherished his life-long friends from high school, his hunting companions through the years, and more recently his fellow dog-walkers in the Waverly Glen. At Ron's request there will be no public viewing hours or memorial service. We, his family, wish to remember him with these words: "His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, 'This was a man.'" With deep sadness, we say good-bye to our loyal Marine, our loving husband, our caring and devoted father, our beloved grandfather, and our good friend.
