Obituary

Romulo "Romy" Bunao, M.D. Romulo passed away in the presence of his loving family on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the Robert Packer Hospital. Born September 4, 1930 in Tarlac, Philippines, he was the only child of the late Juan Bunao and Sotera Macugay. Romulo graduated from the University of Sto. Tomas Manila, Philippines in 1955 and subsequently began an internship at Elizabeth General Hospital, NJ. During his internship he met the love his life and future wife, Margaret "Meg" Hayes. After completing one year of residency in medicine in Paramus, NJ, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA, from 1957-60. He returned to the Philippines and practiced medicine from 1960-62 and then returned to the United States after gaining his citizenship to served as a house officer at Lourdes Hospital, Johnson City, NY. Thereafter, Romulo joined the Guthrie Clinic – Robert Packer Hospital as a fellow in Gastroenterology in 1962, became a member of the Clinic in Internal Medicine in 1964, and served as an Associate in Gastroenterology from 1966-92. Romulo was a member of the Bradford Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He served as a Senior Clinical Instructor at Hahneman Medical, Philadelphia, PA, and the Upstate Medical University (SUNY Bing), Syracuse, NY, a Visiting Physician at Sayre House, Sayre, PA, and the Heritage Nursing Home, Athens, PA. As a devoted Christian, Romulo was an active communicant of St. James Church, Waverly, NY. He served as a songleader and member of the choir, designated lay minister, member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Parish Council, and member of the ministry of liturgy. Romulo retired from medical practice in 1992 after a "29" year career at the Guthrie Clinic and retired at Waneta Lake, Hammondsport, NY, where he enjoyed entertaining friends and family, fishing, gardening, and cooking. He joined St. Stanislaus Church, Bradford, NY, and served as a member of the choir, Cantor, Eucharistic Minister, and Lay Presider. He is predeceased by his wife, Meg, of 53 years. He is survived by his son, Timothy J. Bunao of Newark Valley; daughter, Kathleen L. Dolan of Waverly; daughter, Patricia A. Vargo of Chemung; and daughter, Michele L. (Sam) Goble of Waverly. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jeffery L. Vargo II, Timothy R. Bunao, Michelle L. Vargo, Megan H. Dolan, Darin P. Dolan, Samantha S. Goble, Jacob M. Goble; and two great-grandchildren, Jeffery "Tripp" Vargo III and Emma L. Vargo. Romulo's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride of his life. A Mass of Celebration for Romulo will be held at St. James Church, 503 Clark St., Waverly, NY, at 12 noon Saturday, February 11, 2012. Interment will take place at St. James Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Luckner Funeral Home, 449 Park Avenue, Waverly, NY. Those wishing may direct donations in his memory to the charity of one's choice.
