Obituary

Janet Goodman Doane, 97, of Waverly, N.Y. passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, at Riverview Nursing Facility in Owego, NY.

Janet was born in Ulster, PA to Abraham and Bertha Goodman. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. Janet met Clifton Doane in 1945 at the Manoil Toy Factory in Waverly, NY and they married in April 1946. Janet and Clifton had nine children together.

Janet and Clifton moved the family from East Waverly in 1971, when they purchased and renamed Lyon’s vegetable stand & market on Route 17C to Doane’s. Janet ran the vegetable stand at the farm, selling items including fresh vegetables, eggs, chickens, and many other items. Upon retirement from the farm, Janet worked as a cashier at Kmart in Sayre, PA. Eventually, Janet & Clifton moved to Chemung, NY and traveled the Southeastern US by RV and out to Denver, Colorado to visit their daughter. In later years Clifton and Janet spent winters in Palatka, FL and summers back in Waverly, before eventually returning to Waverly full time.

Janet was a loving mother, who thoroughly enjoyed time with her family, cooking for her family, especially on special occasions such as birthdays, and making special cakes. She had a deep affection for animals and always paid extra attention to her beloved dogs and cats, particularly her poodles Gidget and Taffy. Janet loved technology and her children referred to her as “inspector gadget” as she enjoyed having the latest technological items and updates to play with. Janet enjoyed keeping her home and tinkering with the many electronics, phone systems, vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances, and anything else both mechanical and electrical that she could engineer to work better for her requirements. Janet will be greatly missed by her family.

Janet is survived by sons Clifton Doane II (wife Linda) of Waverly, NY, Mark Doane (wife Linda), of Barton, NY, Adrian Doane of Sayre, PA, and Robin Doane (wife Marge) of Annapolis, MD, daughters June Luther (husband Dan) of Endicott, NY, and Suzann Doane-Ventola (late-husband Joe) of Denver, CO., and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Janet is pre-deceased by her husband, Clifton Doane and sons Michael Doane of Waverly, NY, Gary Doane of Brooklyn, NY, and daughter Connie Brennan of Liverpool, NY. Janet is survived by her sisters June Hakes (husband Merle), Ruby Wittenburg (late-husband Bill), brother Joe Goodman (wife Rose), brother Henry Goodman (wife Johanna), and predeceased by brothers George and Bill Goodman and sister Juel Goodman.
