Edward Joseph Kelly, of Waverly, New York, unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, July 16. Edward was born on August 28, 1936 in Pittston, Pa. He was the son of Edward Sr. and Margaret Kelly. He attended Sayre High School. Edward was a 31-year veteran of the New York State Police. He began his career as a trooper in April 1962. He held various assignments in Troop's A, C, F and K. He became an investigator in 1968 and then a sergeant in 1970. In 1973, he was promoted to senior investigator and then to lieutenant in 1986. In 1988, he became a captain in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Later in 1989, he was promoted to major. Finally in 1992, he became a Staff inspector in State HQs and retired from the state police in December 1993. After retiring from the state police, he was appointed to the position of U.S. Marshall by President Clinton. He served in this role for eight years through 2002. Ed will be remembered for the tremendous commitment and devotion he showed to law enforcement throughout his career. Ed treasured the relationships he forged with many of his colleagues throughout his career. His family remains very proud of his accomplishments and his legacy. Upon leaving the Marshall position, Ed continued to do investigative work right up to the time of his death. Ed leaves behind his best friend and beloved wife JoAnne and their marriage of 56 years. Ed's favorite past time was dancing with JoAnne. Ed is survived by his four children, Timothy, his wife Pamela and their three children Kaitlyn, Courtney and Kevin; Michael, his wife Brenda and their four children Krista, Coleen, Erin and Kyle; Maureen Passarelli, her husband Joe and their four children Joe, Julie, John and Joshua; and Patricia Reiter, her husband Michael and their daughter Kelly. Ed shared a tremendous love and special relationship with each of his children and grandchildren. Edward is also survived by his sister Jean and husband Nick Zello and their children Mark, Joseph, Peggy, Colleen, Nick, Edward and John; his brother Larry and his wife Patricia, nephews and nieces, Larry Michael, Theresa, Kevin, Chris, Brian and Peggy; his sister Jean and husband Nick Zello and their children Mark, Joseph, Peggy, Colleen, Nick, Edward and John; JoAnne's sister Mary Keene and her husband Jerry, their children Denise, Jerry, Paul and Donna. Finally, by JoAnne's brother Paul Corcoran. Edward's life is characterized by dedication and commitment. He had a very special impact on his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at Saint James Church in Waverly at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 22. Visiting hours will be held at the Luckner Funeral Home in Waverly, New York, on Thursday July 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in the memory of Edward Kelly may be directed to the Prostate Cancer Research Fund at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center (in memory of Ed Kelly, John Kimmel Cancer Center, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 234, Baltimore, MD 21201), or Saint James Church in Waverly.
