Obituary

Betty A. Hughes. Of Waverly Betty A. Hughes, 93, of Waverly passed away Friday December 28, 2012 at the Elderwood Health Care  Facility. Born December 22, 1919 in Waverly NY the daughter of the late Clara (Deyo) and Orin Rea. She was the  loving wife of the late Robert Hughes.  Betty was also predeceased by her brothers, Joseph and Philip Rea and her son- in- law Richard Nusbaum. Betty was a lifelong resident of the Valley. She graduated from Waverly High School Class of 1937. She was a member of Blessed Trinity Parish Saint James Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Betty was a former member of both the Waverly and Sayre Senior Citizens Groups. She was a homemaker first and foremost, and she worked as a sales representative for Avon for many years. Her greatest joy was her family, she loved watching her grandchildren's sports and other activities. Betty was an avid sports fan especially fond of the Mets. She also loved to crochet, play Bingo , and her trips to the Casino to play the slots. Surviving Betty are her children; Michael (Nancy) Hughes, Bob (Linda ) Hughes, and Ann Nusbaum (Richard Samer), all of Waverly., grandchildren, Denise (Dave) Matweecha, Nicole Birney, Julie (Jason)Romano, Brian (Trisha) Hughes and Jeffery and Christopher Hughes ,great grandchildren, James, Cassandra, and Patrick Birney, Isabella Romano, and Nicholas, and Katelyn Matweecha, great grandchildren, as well as several nieces, and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday Evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Luckner Funeral Home 449 Park Avenue Waverly NY. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday January 3rd , 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Parish Saint James Church.  The family will provide flowers.
