She was born in Albany, N.Y., on Oct. 20, 1915 and received her bachelor's and master's degrees in library science from the State Teachers College in Albany. She arrived in Waverly in 1942, taking a position as social studies teacher and school librarian at Mary Muldoon School. After meeting J. Warren Knapp III following his discharge from the U.S. Army, they were married in 1944 and resided in Waverly. She also worked at Knapp's Hardware store with her husband until his death in 1973. Alice was employed as a librarian in both the Waverly and Elmira school districts until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waverly until her death. She sang in the choir, and she served as an elder, clerk of the session and Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She was also a member of the Women's Association and was the voice of Gabriel in the annual Christmas pageant. For many years she was a member of the University Women's Club and the Polyhymnia Music Club. She is survived by: her three children, Betsy, Peggy (Sila) and Joseph; her daughter-in-law, Maureen; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, 459 Park Ave., Waverly, on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Alice's name to the Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
